Find out more about our KPU® dietary supplement!

Cryptopyroluria (KPU) is a biochemical-enzymatic haem metabolism disorder that often occurs in children and adults with a positive family history (autoimmune diseases in the mother, hypothyroidism of unclear etiology in both parents). This problem affects nearly 10% of the population.

Haemopyrollactamuria is associated with deficiency symptoms of zinc, vitamin B6, manganese, biotin, magnesium, chromium, lithium and arachidonic acid.

The loss of these minerals is too significant to be made up through a balanced diet. Laboratory test results show elevated copper levels, increased or decreased serum histamine concentration, as well as immunoglobulin IgA deficiency or homocysteine excess.

KPU is associated with increased urinary excretion of hemopyrrolin (HPL). Genetic, environmental, infectious (chronic bacterial infections, e.g. by Borrelia burgdorferi) and psychological (trauma or chronic stress) factors are identified as the causes of the development of KPU.

The basis of support for KPU-affected persons is supplementation with the minerals in question. When choosing supplementation, special attention should be paid to manganese. It has been found that co-exposure of the brain mitochondria to manganese and ammonia (produced in excess by gut bacteria) causes more evident mitochondrial impairment. Cryptopyrrole analysis in urine can be performed in Poland at the Genom laboratory in Wrocław.

The KPU supplement should be taken with or after a meal. Zinc contained in the product when taken on an empty stomach can cause a feeling of nausea, so zinc should always be supplemented after a meal. Because of its content of B vitamins, we recommend taking the supplement by 4 pm at the latest.
